Detox water is one of the best ways to keep your weight loss game on track. Now, we all are aware of the fact that drinking lots of water or keeping yourself hydrated enough speeds up the body’s metabolism and thus helps with the weight loss.

Drinking plain water can become boring at times. Sometimes I feel nauseous if I drink too much of water. So why not add some natural ingredients to it to make it interesting and tasty at the same time. Wouldn’t it be better to drink water from a colourful jar or bottle.

We need detox water to flush out the toxins from our body. Adding fruits and veges and herbs to this water just speeds up the process as compared to drinking plain water.

There are certain rules I follow for my detox water recipes.

  • Add in cucumbers as much as possible. Cucumbers act as natural diuretics and so prevent water retention when had on a daily basis. They also have rehydrating properties.
  • Never forget the citrus component. It has fat burning enzymes and also helps the digestive tract. Plus it adds a nice flavour to the water.
  • Herbs are very important as they contain cleansing properties and also act as stress relievers. They contain anti-oxidants which help flush out toxins.

Lemon water– as simple as it sounds, lemon water is one the best detox drinks. Just add a few slices of lemon or lemon wedges to a pitcher, some mint leaves and some cucumber slices. Add lots of ice (this is optional) and fill it with water. Let it sit for atleast 2 to 3 hours. Ta-da…detox water is ready.

Watermelon love– I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t love watermelons. The red colour, the taste and added advantage of all that water makes it a go to fruit during the summers. So, I thought why to just eat it plain, and why not try a detox drink out of it. And let me tell you it tasted yum. It has become my go to detox water during summers. How to make it? Just add some watermelon pieces, some mint leaves, and a couple lemon slices (you can even add lemon juice instead of the slices). Add some crushed ice and top the jar or bottle with water. Let it sit for 3 to 4 hours and voila! Watermelon love is ready.

Twisty Lemon water– just combine lemon slices, rosemary and ginger in a jar. Top it all with crushed ice and water. And your twisty lemon water is ready to be consumed.

Fruit mix– so as the name suggests its not just one fruit that you will need. For this recipe you will need one pear, one orange and few strawberries, cut them all up into slices/ wedges. Add these to a pitcher alongwith some mint leaves and lemon wedges. Add in ice and water and let it sit for a couple of hours. Your fruit mix is ready to hydrate you through the day.

Berrylicious– you will need around one cup of blueberries, some rosemary and water. That’s all. Add in some crushed ice as well. Enjoy your berrylicious drink in those hot summers.

Detox green tea– yes, that’s right. Green tea can also be used in detox waters. You will need green tea (brew it like you always do or use green tea bags), lemon, honey, strawberries and cucumber. The first step is to brew your green tea as usual and then put it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to chill. To this add one lemon slice, 1 strawberry cut into pieces, 2 to 3 cucumber slices and a little honey. Stir well and add ice (optional). This can even be a great drink when you have your friends over.

Making your own detox water seems so easy, especially when at home. But what when you are travelling or you want to carry it to work or take it along when you have to wait outside your kids school to pick them up. Ever since the birth of my son in march 2017, I had been experiencing the worst hair fall ever. During my pregnancy my hormones blessed with the best hair I could think of and then they decided to ditch me. I was so scared of even combing my hair. I remember my maid telling me once that there are more of hair strands on the floor that dust and kids mess.

That was when I decided that I had to do something about it before going bald.

That is when a friend recommended mamaearth and I love her for that. I started using their argan hair mask and I could see reduced hair fall in just the second wash. A few months back I started using their other hair products also and I am so happy I did. In todays post I will be sharing my experience with you all. And are super gentle on the skin and hair. Plus all of them smell great!!!

To begin with, all mamaearth products are dermatologically tested, suit all hair types, have no silicones and are phthalates free, dye free, paraben free and SLS free. These are made up of 100% natural ingredients

ARGAN HAIR MASK– this has to be the most hydrating and nourishing hair mask I have ever used. I could see the results in the second wash itself. It can be used both as a leave in conditioner and rinse off conditioner. I use it twice a week as a rinse off conditioner. The Argan oil, avocado oil, milk protein and curd extract present in the mask effectively reduce hair fall, repair damaged hair and soothe the scalp thus promoting new hair growth. This was the first mamaearth hair product that I tried and since then there is no looking back.

ROOT RESTORE HAIR OIL– with the goodness of rosemary oil, bhringraj oil & vitamin E. I have been using this oil thrice a week in my routine. It is recommended that we apply it at least 30 minutes before a head wash, but I usually apply it at least 2 to 3 hours prior to my head bath. I massage it for a good 10 to 15 minutes into the scalp and then wrap a moist towel for 15 to 20 minutes for maximum effects. The rosemary oil and bhringraj oil have really helped in strengthening mu hair roots. My hair fall has reduced drastically. plus, the vitamin E has given me an added effect of nourished hair and is reducing the dryness of the scalp and hair as well especially in this weather. I am really happy with the results and I would recommend all you mamas out there to give it a try as well.

HAPPY HEADS SHAMPOO- is very efficient in cleansing the scalp and that too in just 1 application. Earlier I used to shampoo my hair twice like once to clean the scalp and 2nd time to wash off the hair. But with this shampoo I am done with just 1 application. It lathers up really well and leaves your scalp squeaky clean. It has this amazing fresh smell to it that makes me want to use it every day. I use lukewarm water to wash it off. My hair feels so soft once dry. It nourishes pretty well in this dry weather. Though I have a oily scalp, my hair lengths tend to get dry and frizzy in this weather, but now NO MORE!!!

NO MORE TANGLES CONDITIONER- Tangles are one of the major reasons for hair breakage and split ends. The Vitamin B5 in this conditioner, strengthens the hair follicles and removes dead skin cells as well, thus leaving a healthy scalp. The cocoa butter and milk protein give that added nourishment to the hair and makes them soft and shiny. For added results wrap a moist towel over after applying the conditioner and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes before washing off the conditioner. Your fingers/ comb will slide smoothly through your hair post drying them. No more tangles you see..

P.S. I have received the best compliments for my hair ever since I have started using these products. And that includes my hair stylist (you know how these salon people have a habit of saying not so good things about your skin and hair at every visit). Also, all my family and friends who used these products on my recommendation are so happy with the results.

Simple ayurvedic tips for glowing skin & healthy hair

We all wish for a smooth & glowing skin and shiny, thick, soft hair. But more often we find that weather changes, physical & mental stress cause many skin and hair problems, stress being one of the major causes. We tend to use different types of creams, lotions and what not to deal with these issues. But most of the times, the results last only till the usage of those products. So todays post is about a much deeper approach to solving these problems- AYURVEDA.

AYURVEDA is not just a science. It is a way of life. It is following a lifestyle that benefits in the long run, making you the best version of yourself. It believes that beauty comes from within.

SKIN is our body’s protective outer shell has to put up with a lot. Things like chemicals, sunlight, heat, harsh cold, sweaty gym sessions, diets, mental stress etc., keep it under constant assault. And as we know every action has an equal and opposite reaction, our skin reacts by giving us acne, blackheads, dry skin, dark circles, etc.

Ayurveda believes that skin problems aren’t superficial, but they are the reflections of the hidden realities of our body. And so, Ayurvedic skin care aims at targeting the underlying causes. This approach definitely takes more time but gives real and sustained results. And the best part is, that the improvements we see are not just limited to the skin surface, but will improve our bodily functions in general.

Ayurveda suggests the following simple measures to curb these issues.

Schedule: Stick to a daily schedule that keeps your mind and body cool and in rhythm.

Breathing exercises: mental stress plays a very important role in skin and hair problems. Controlled breathing exercises are a great way to calm the mind and reduce stress. You can practice these before bedtime or any other time of the day.

Mindful Yoga

Diet: Eat healthy & whole foods; eat light & cooling foods; have pitta pacifying tea (cumin, coriander & fennel). Include high water content vegetables in your diet like cucumbers, lettuce and carrots. Also include nuts & seeds in your daily diet. These contain Omega- 3’s.

All of these are very simple day to day adjustments and changes that we all can actually follow. So go ahead and bring about this change for ourselves. Then there will no looking back.

This has to be one of my best buys till now. This is one of those very few products that give you instant results and that too from the very first use. Especially useful to beat the post-partum dullness. Let’s talk about the key ingredients first.

Key ingredients: Purified water, Cetostearyl Alcohol. Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Isopropyl Myristate, Kokum Butter, Apricot Oil, Kaolin, Magnesium Carbonate, Titanium Dioxide, Bentonite, Magnesium Aluminium Silicate, Niacinamide, Mulberry Extract, Cucumber Extract, Papaya Extract, Basil Oil, Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Chamomile Extract, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Glycolic Acid, Citric Acid, Caffeine Anhydrous, Activated Charcoal Powder, Hydroxycinnamic Acid, Propylene Glycol Dibenzoate & Potassium Sorbate.

It is Phthalates free, Mineral oil free, SLS free, and Paraben free as well. Wow too much of goodness in one little tub. The goodness of coffee, charcoal, clay and minerals like potassium and magnesium help stimulate the blood circulation. This in turn helps to remove toxins giving healthy skin. It reduces the excessive melanin production which smoothes away the blemishes and lessens the pigmentation. Charcoal is known to help fight acne, pimples and other oily skin issues. The fruit extracts like papaya, mulberry, cucumber act on the skins elasticity and minimize the pores thus leaving a healthy and youthful glow. You will have naturally glowing skin.

How to apply: apply a generous layer on the face and upper neck avoiding the eye area. Let it dry for around 10 to 15 minutes. While removing, first gently rub it in circular motions (this will exfoliate your skin) and then wash off with lukewarm water. Pat dry with a towel and finish it up with your regular toner and moisturiser. It is recommended that you use it twice a week for best results.

I am in love with this goodness since my very first use. My pores have reduced and so has my acne. I have this glow on my face after every use (the picture says it all). My skin feels squeaky clean, breathable and calm. This mask is a blessing in this scorching heat. This is one of the best products mamaearth has given us. Kudos to that. They never disappoint with any of their products. I cant wait to try their other products.

Do try it out and trust me you wont be disappointed.

Stay tuned for more.

Till then

Take care

Two essential steps to smooth and healthy skin

Ever since i remember, i have faced skin problems (Thanks to oily skin!!!). I had given up!! I couldnt have great skin ever. I had to live with my skin issues.

I remember sharing my skin problems with a dear friend of mine and she said haven’t you used a toner? I was like, what is that? Yesss…. i know it might be shocking to a lot many of you but i hadn’t heard or used a toner until by final year of undergrad. Let me tell you, i really thank her for that advice. Because that piece of advice changed my skin care game for good. And yes it has helped me have a smooth toned and healthy skin. This was one, the second one was something my husband had been coaxing me to do but i just didnt. You know how they say, Wife is always right. Well i definitely believed in it until i listened to him and came to realise that husbands can be right too (uhh..only sometimes!).

So here’s two things that completely changed my skin care game and for good.
TONER: Well let me tell you toners play a great role in skin care regimes, and especially for oily skin people. I bless the person who invented it and also bless my friend who introduced us. First lets talk about how and what a toner actually does.

  1. It shrinks your pores- Just take some toner on a cotton ball or pad and dab it onto your skin, let it sit for a few minutes and then apply your daily moisturiser. Thats it! simple isnt it? this will help to remove excess oil and will thus give smaller pores.
  2. Restores skin pH balance- Naturally, our skin has an acidic pH. Somewhere between 5 and 6. Now, the soaps/ face washes that we use are known to have a alkaline pH. Thus using them on a regular basis can disturb your skin’s normal pH. This is where the toner helps to balance that disturbance and bring it back to normal.
  3. Protector- As i said earlier, it helps in closing or reducing the pores and hence tightens the cell gaps. This prevents the impurities and pollutants from entering the deeper layers of the skin and thus reducing the gunk that accumulates in the pores.
  4. Some toners available these days even have a moisturising property to themselves. So 1 product and two steps of your skin care routine done.
  5. Refreshener: Just spray/ dab a little toner on your oily and dirty skin. VOILA!! Refreshed skin and refreshed you.
  6. I have read somewhere that the glycolic and the other alpha hydroxy acids in a toner help to prevent ingrown hair. I havent ever tried using a toner for this purpose, but i will definitely try it out and let u all know.

The biggest problem i suffered was of breakouts. may it be that time of the month or for that matter eating raw onions and garlic. But thanks to this little guy here, i am able to keep those monsters at bay. Though a couple of them (read 1 or 2) do visit me every month, but now they dont scare me anymore. I know what they are frightened of and i always have it for my rescue.

At present I am using the Biotique Bio Honey Water pore tightening toner with Himalayan waters for all skin types, the Neutrogena Deep Clean blackhead eliminating cooling toner and sometimes my Kama Ayurveda Pure Rosewater.

We all use sunscreens right. But I was a person who used sunscreen only while going out in the sun. My husband kept telling me that I should use them on a daily basis but somehow, I never listened to him. But now that I have started using it every day, I thank him for that. Lets just first talk about the uses of a sunscreen in general and then I will tell you how it helped my skin.

  1. Protection- Sunscreens mainly act by absorbing or reflecting the UV rays. It prevents the harmful rays from reaching the deeper layers of the skin and thus preventing damage. This helps to keep premature aging at bay.
  2. It has been proven that sunscreens lower the risk of skin cancers caused due to the harmful UV rays.
  3. Lowers blotchiness on face– sunscreens prevents the onset of blotchiness and red veins. This is also important to prevent acne and other sun rays induced damages.
  4. Prevents sunburns– I have had numerous sunburns during my undergrad years. We had to walk from our hostel to college and elsewhere within the campus in a temperature of around 48 degrees. This gave me sunburns on my face. And that too in spite of covering my face with a scarf. Yes, I had this misconception that covering my face with a scarf and an umbrella was enough. But it was not. Only when I started using sunscreen on a daily basis with a minimum SPF of 30 did I get rid of sunburns and other skin damages. Sunburns weaken our skin and make it prone to other sun induced damages. It may lead to peeling, redness, hives and itching. This can in turn escalate the risk of skin cancer.
  5. Prevents tanning– some people like to sunbathe to tan. But at the same time they are exposing themselves to harmful UVB rays for a great amount of time. Sunscreens play a major role here. A minimum of SPF 30 should be used.
  6. Healthy skin– as discussed earlier, sunscreens prevent the harmful rays from entering the deeper layers of the skin. Hence they protect the essential skin proteins like collagen, keratin and elastin. Thus keeping our skin smooth and healthy.
  7. Cosmetic option– many sunscreens these days double up as a moisturiser also.

Now, coming back to me. Using a sunscreen on a daily basis has given me a even toned skin, lesser fine lines and overall an improved complexion by preventing dullness and pigmentation . I use it in my morning skin care routine, as a third step that is after applying my moisturiser. When going out, apply it 30 minutes before stepping out for best results.

At present I am using the Biotique Bio Aloe Vera 30+ SPF UVA UVB sunscreen lotion for normal to oily skin alternately to my all time favourite Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Sunblock SPF 30.

So thats it.. Simple isnt it. Do try it out and i am sure you will get the desired results.

Stay tuned for more
